What’s on your furlough list?

It looks like there is a high probability that Congress will not be able to pass a budget bill. what that means is that after April 8th, the U.S. Government will be shut down with the exception of “essential” personnel. Those are people who are in the military or carrying out duties that could be life saving or the bare minimum to keep the government running. I am not one of those people!

The explanation at our staff meeting last week was that we will be required to come into work the first day of work where they will then explain the rules of furlough. Basically, it will be illegal for us to work, check our phones, mail, etc. Furlough is unpaid leave until such time that the budget is passed and we can return to work.

What will be interesting is to see how long this budget battle will last. Normally, the budget should have been passed before the end of September of last year. So we have not been operating off of a real budget for over six months, which leaves very little room to adjust for the last six months of the year.

Most folks in the office did not seem to be upset about it at all! Some view it as a time off to relax. I think a lot of us have been overworked and need a little time off. What better time than in the spring! So we have all been putting together our list of things to do on furlough, some have described working in their furlough garden. What’s on your list?
